Since I get all my clothing from unguarded machines at the laundromat, I’m not down with the latest fashion. Is flannel still in? It is getting cold out.
All my fashion knowledge comes from advertising, so I was shocked to hear that Ralph Lauren was handing out DMCA takedown notices to websites showing a Ralph Lauren ad featuring an overly skinny model sporting some of the latest fashion. Two websites in particular, Photoshop Disasters and Boing Boing, didn’t say the nicest things about the ad, but they didn’t modify the ad in any way. They just commented on an ad that Ralph Lauren sent out the door with the goal of selling denim.
Is seems silly for Ralph Lauren to order websites to take down free advertising.
Maybe the Internet has it all wrong. I mean, the ad doesn’t look that bad. I still want to buy those jeans, and now I know that the top isn’t made out of a fabric with much stretch. It does look like the model’s head is sucking nutrients from the rest of her body, but when was a model with a big brain a bad thing? Ralph Lauren is dispelling the myth of stupid models.
Maybe Ralph Lauren is producing clothing that allows people to teleport. The model’s waist in the ad isn’t overly skinny, it’s just where her quantum leap originates. If the ad was a video instead of a still photo, the model would flash out of frame and appear ten seconds later holding some trinket from the Orient.
UPDATE
According to Agencyspy, Ralph Lauren has apologized for the photoshopped model. I guess they figured they couldn’t stop the entire Internet from commenting on the ad.
A Ralph Lauren representative had this to say:
After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman’s body.
See, they wanted Boing Boing and Photoshop Disasters to take the image down because they weren’t done investigating the ad they produced, shot, retouched, and then released to sell clothing. My favorite part of the quote is “we have learned that we are responsible.” Who else could have been responsible? Is there some bitter newsboy out there with CS4 and a laser jet scanner who missed Ralph Lauren’s last sale? Maybe it was the model’s fault:
“I TOLD THAT BITCH NOT TO SUCK IN HER GUT. WE’RE RUINED.”
The camera’s fault?
“Shit, the camera added ten pounds ..to her skull.”
